Zig Ziglar & King David on Goals!

I have to admit. After my son sent me this short video of Zig Ziglar speaking about goals, I got very motivated. You see, everything I heard Zig say, I had already observed in King David’s life, the day he took down Goliath.

Zig packs a powerful message in just 5 minutes. It’s classic Zig. Do yourself a favor and watch it!

  1. What’s your big objective?
    1. David’s was to “take away the reproach of Israel, that all the earth may know there is a God in Israel.” (1 Samuel 17:26 & 46)
  1. When will you achieve this goal?
    1. For David, it was the same day!
  1. Commit yourself to the goal
    1. David volunteered publicly
    2. He boldly declared his goal to Goliath (1 Samuel 17:45-47)
  1. Identify the obstacles to reaching your goal
    1. David’s first obstacles were his brothers who mocked him for showing up. He quickly turned away from them, ignoring their accusations.
    2. Goliath… A nine foot tall behemoth that had a nation trembling in fear.
  1. How has life prepared me for this challenge?
    1. David had developed a relationship with God that the others did not seem to have.
    2. He had killed both a lion and a bear with just his sling and a knife.
  1. What do I need to know that I don’t already?
    1. David appraised himself of the relevant facts. Then he prepared for the unknown by carrying extra stones in case they were needed.
  1. Whose help do I need to make these goals a reality?
    1. David considered the help of King Saul. He tried on his armor and coat of mail. Even brandished Saul’s sword, but all of them were found wanting.
    2. There wasn’t one soldier in the entire army who was willing to fight, so David went alone. Sometimes we have to make the same choice.
    3. Although no man went with David, he was confident that God was with him and that was more than enough!
  1. What’s my plan of action?
    1. David decided to use his proven weapon of choice – a sling and a smooth stone.
    2. He would strike Goliath in the head, knocking him unconscious or at least stunning him, then run towards him and cut his head off before he had a chance to recover consciousness.
  1. What’s in it for me if I succeed?
    1. David confirmed the reward three times. For the man who killed Goliath, it was promised they would receive great riches, the kings daughter and tax free living for the rest of his life.
 10. Execute without hesitation or second-guessing
  1. David ran towards the opposition, took out Goliath, vindicated Israel and accomplished his goal.
