Why Dreams Die

By Michael Q. Pink

June 13, 2018

“Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward.” Hebrews 10:35

The number one cause of the death of a dream that I see, is people lose confidence in their dream before it ever gets off the ground.

It’s a crying shame really. So many great dreams, beautiful visions, magnificent destinies dropped in the hearts of men and women by God Himself. What at first excites them, at the last scares them.

And about the time the seed germinates and breaks through the surface of the ground reaching daylight, something happens.

It happened to Peter. He had this idea that if Jesus would command him to walk on water, he could. Wow! That’s a pretty audacious dream!

He could take that testimony on the road! He could write a bestselling book! (Maybe even two.) The possibilities were seemingly endless.

But then it happened. After stepping out of the boat and actually walking on the water, he lost confidence. Why? When he saw the wind and the waves he concluded, “You can’t walk on water when it’s windy!”

When you start looking at the reasons your dream shouldn’t work, sure as Moses, it won’t work. And you, like Peter, will begin to sink.

But Jesus is still there and will lift you up if you ask Him to. Of course, He will most likely say to you what He said to Peter, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

It happens to all of us who dream.

We get an idea, see a vision, devise a plan, but then it happens… Doubt and resistance comes rushing in like a flash flood from seemingly out of nowhere.

Will people like it? Will they join? Will they buy? Who am I anyway? I’m not a celebrity. I’m not well known. What have I done to give the market confidence anyway?

I’ve got good news for you. Every venture began as a seed, planted by somebody who nobody knew. And before it sprang up, no one and I mean no one, could see it.

That dream was there alright. Buried underground, incubating, drinking in water (drinking the Word), absorbing warmth (building passion), but no one could see it except you.

So you wonder. Will this ever sprout? Will it grow? Will it become a tree? Will it bear fruit? Will the fruit be good?

Of course it will! If you don’t dig it up with unbelief. If you don’t cast away your confidence. If you water it with the Word. If you nurture passion.

But so many people look to their seed to produce fruit right away and when it doesn’t, they cast away their confidence. They look for confirmation in the words and the eyes of those who were not given the dream and cannot see what it is destined to become.

They no longer nurture the dream, nor water it with the Word. And it dies. Not because it wasn’t worthy. Not because it wasn’t of God. It died because they gave up. They cast away their confidence.

Understand this.

Your dream will be tested. The birds will come to steal the word, the vision, the dream you originally had.

Your job is to drive the birds (the naysayers, the critics, the fearful and cowardly) away.

Your job is to stay in faith, and steward the growth of that seed into maturity.

Your choice is simple. You must either…

  1. Elevate your faith and confidence equal to the dream, or
  2. Downsize your dream equal to your faith.

Which will you choose?

Until next time, be fruitful and multiply!

    • Why thank you Rick! Never thought about that, but I did have a call from a friend in Texas who thought I could launch off of this topic. I will give that serious consideration.

I did this post (https://blog.michaelpink.com/problems-are-your-provision/) on April 15th and was looking at turning that into a book. What do you think?

BTW, drop me a line sometime. Would love to know how (and what) you are doing these days.

      Blessings!
