The Glove…

By Michael Q. Pink

July 2, 2020

If you were walking down the road and came across a nicely stitched, fur lined, leather glove, would you assume that it was a freak of nature or would you conclude that someone must have made that glove?

With a clear and obvious design, any reasonable thinking person would naturally conclude there must also be a designer. The beautiful evenly spaced stitching, the fine leather texture with just the right coloration, the soft rabbit-like fur lining, and of course, the perfect dimensions for each finger, including the thumb.

Obviously, considerable thought by an intelligent person went into creating that glove. It did not just evolve over a period of thousands of years. To think otherwise would be lunacy.

And yet, the human eye is infinitely more complex in its function, coloration, and even its connection to the nervous system. It’s amazing design would leave any reasonable thinking person to conclude that there must also be a Designer.

And that’s just the eye. What about the human body with all of its billions of cells working together to process food, light, air, information, etc.? Don’t get me started on the human brain!

So there must be a Designer.

And yet, that glove, be it a baseball glove, a gardening glove, a winter glove, a driving glove or just a glove for playing golf, will never fulfill its purpose until and unless someone puts their hand in that glove, animates it and puts it to its intended use.

Without that action, that glove would simply remain on the side of the road, dirty, trampled on, ignored and abused. If it had consciousness, it would find ways to medicate the pain of loneliness and rejection.

If it were a fine white glove for evening wear, and didn’t know its purpose, it might become a glove used for collecting garbage or digging in the garden because when purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable.

But imagine if that glove could truly fulfill the purpose for which the designer made it. How fulfilling! How utterly satisfying! How completely joyful!

My friend, we are like the glove. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. But we were born on the side of the dusty road and have been run over, rained on and kicked aside. Seemingly left to our own devices, our own choices, our own decisions.

And until and unless God puts His Spirit in us, and animates our life, we will never know the purpose for which we were designed. But when His Spirit comes inside us, suddenly, like the glove, we move and have our being in a way we never thought possible.

The unseen hand of God moves us in ways we dared not dream of. Life is still full of dangers, toils and snares, but His grace will lead us safely out of the ditch and across that busy road to the other side.

Along the way, we will have the high honor and great privilege of helping other “gloves” on the side of the road, to realize they are no accident of nature, and they did not against all odds, emerge out of the slime millions of years ago and eventually become human.

We can introduce them to the Designer and invite them to experience the indescribable thrill of experiencing in a conscious way, His incomprehensible love as He, by their invitation, slips His Hand (His Spirit) in them and not only gives their life meaning, purpose and destiny, but grants them eternal life, without end.

Would you like to experience what it’s like to have God put His Spirit in you and lead you into your ultimate destiny? Simply acknowledge that you have lived your life thus far on your own terms, living your life in opposition to God’s design and plan without ever a thought of giving Him control of your life.

Surrender your life, your hopes, your dreams, your very spirit, soul and body to Him. Invite Him to put His hand, His Spirit in you and take control.

Most importantly, mean every word you say. This is not a ritual or an experiment or a game. Your destiny, your eternal future and your present existence depends on the sincerity of your request. Reach into the depth of your soul and ask God with everything that is in you, to forgive you for your errant ways and for living your life as though He were completely optional at best, or non-existent at worst.

Then invite Him with all of your heart to come and take up residence in you, and make you cleaner than you ever thought possible and happier than you’ve ever imagined. It is only natural that you won’t know what all that means, but when you turn to Him and invite Him in, He will, over time, bring you into the full understanding of what you just did.

And if you did that, pick up a Bible and read it again for the first time. I would suggest beginning with the gospel of John. You will be blown away by what you never saw before.

Welcome to your new life!

Once you get your bearings, go and help some other gloves on the side of the road to experience what you now have. There’s nothing quite like it. Not even close.

And remind them that He will be with them, even until the end of the age. He will never leave them on the side of the road. He will never discard them. He will love them through every mistake and celebrate every victory with them.

He is amazing that way!

Spread the Word!

Here’s the incredible backstory about the glove…

In 2004 I was invited to Jamaica to speak at a conference of Christian CEO’s. While there, we had some free time and hired a driver with his vehicle to show us the sites, etc.

In the course of our driving, he shared that he was a Rastafarian and believed that Haile Selassie, former emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974, was in fact God. I found that interesting, especially because a friend of mine was good friends with Haile Selassie’s grandson, who assured him that his grandfather was definitely not God.

That came as a bit of a shock to our driver. It was then, that the Holy Spirit who indwells me, gave me an illustration to share with our driver that demonstrated how God could actually live within us. I then asked him if he wanted to have that experience.

He said he wanted to think about it overnight but would give an answer the next morning when he returned to take us out again. The next morning, he was smiling brightly as he had made the decision to invite Jesus Christ to live in his heart. It was a beautiful and memorable moment.

The illustration that really spoke to him was the one God gave me while we were driving the day before, that I now call, The Glove”.

A few years later, I was invited by an international life insurance company to train their sales teams in two different countries, a few days apart. I was known as a Christian sales trainer who taught Biblical wisdom for succeeding in sales, but I was instructed to not make any overt references to Scripture.

Before arriving there however, the Lord told me of His plan, that He wanted me to start a fire in those countries. Not sure exactly what that meant, I traveled there and shared with the company president what I felt God had given me to do.

He was a Christian and told me that out of the 45 sales reps in the next day’s training, only about 15 were actually believers. I asked if it would be alright, if at the end of the training, I could share the glove illustration and give an invitation for folks to respond.

He replied hesitatingly in the affirmative, as neither one of us had ever seen or done an invitation to receive Christ in a corporate sales training setting. At the end of the day of training, I shared the glove illustration and let them know I would pray with any of them that wanted to invite God to live in them.

The president closed out the meeting by reminding everyone when and where to turn in their expense receipts and what time the Monday sales meeting would start. He then added, “If anyone wants Michael to pray with them, he will be over here at the side of the room.”

I don’t think either of us expected what happened next…

The entire room of 45 salespeople stood up as one person and came to the front to receive prayer and invite the Lord to live in them. As I prayed with them individually, the president sat on the front row, with tears streaming down his face. His entire sales team dedicated their life to God.

Even the video contractor who recorded the meeting came forward for prayer. I had never seen anything like it before, especially in a corporate setting.

That scene would repeat itself a couple days later when we got to the next country. Somehow, God used that simple illustration to settle in their hearts the reality of God and their need, indeed their secret desire, to be cleansed and receive the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.

I’ve shared this illustration with an atheist, a Rastafarian, agnostic and everything in between. Almost without exception, it rings true and they want to receive this amazing gift of Salvation God made possible through Jesus Christ.

Yesterday, a dear brother in Christ, prevailed upon me to put the glove in writing and share it with him. He said he believed it would help many others. I hope he is right. Thank you Ron!

  • Michael,
A truly wonderful but simplistic way to share the Good News as it is ever important to give people hope and a purpose in this life.
Thank you for sharing this effective but yet illustrative story.
    Many Blessings, Ron

    • Thank you Ron for being the inspiration to share the story. I have now recorded it and put it on my YouTube channel. Unfortunately, I don’t have the benefit of your amazing videography skills.

  • Michael… yet another “best of the best” commentary and blueprint for communicating the Love of God, into the hearts and minds of those that are unsure or skeptical of Christ Jesus’ plan, provision, and purpose for their lives eternal.

    Galatians 2:20, 2 Peter 1:2-4

    • Thank you Geary. I love your heart for communicating the Love of God as well! It’s interesting that my story could be called G – Love as in the God kind of love (GLove)

  • Thank you so much .I have been praying for God to give me an effective way of sharing the Gospel.

  • Michael, this is excellent. I will be sending this to our pastoral team, and anyone else I can think of. If it is okay with you, I would like to create a PDF of this for future reference, and also for one on one evangelism. I have an Instagram account: mr.pma.88, that I would like to post this on too.
I will take a look at the YouTube video today NZ time.

  • Hello Michael! What an awesome story and analogy! It was meant for me to read. Loved the story with the Rastafarian. I am West Indian and I love roots reggae music, so it hits home for me. Though I am Christian and I never sought after the belief, through the music God has made me aware to what is true and the heart behind it.

  • Thank you, Michael, for using your platform to reach those who need Jesus. So here’s just a question I have about The Glove: are you leaving out the name of Jesus so it wouldn’t offend anyone? After all He is the only way to God.

    • Good question Chiew! Absolutely not. Leaving out the name of Jesus would be akin to leaving out the path of Salvation. His name and who He is, is central. Thanks so much for asking for clarification.

  • I have always believed that I am one that is sitting in GOD's waiting room for HIM to enlighten me with the true essence of my being .The GLOVE narrative is so uplifting and directional…..Thanks Michael

  • This is great Michael. Thank you for sharing it. I have read it before when looking through your online content in the past. May I copy it and keep it on hand in my files for future use should I be led to do so?

  • Bring them in, I am so happy, to see this, we have to bring them in. I died in 2005 after a serious operation, and I met Jesus. see”Dancing with Jesus” Brenda Holder on you tube, It was awesome…
