I want to dispel a lie.
A lot of really good people who are in sales or have their own business are struggling. And they believe the reason they’re not doing as well as someone else in their office, or the competitor across town is because they won’t compromise their integrity.
They feel the pressure to conform, to the subtleties of deception, the so called, “white lies”, the glossing over of pertinent facts that could be detrimental to their sale, etc.
They feel that they’re not as slick, as polished, as affable, funny or engaging as the super popular top salesman that others seem to envy.
Do you really want to be that person?
You’re much better at being you. And you, is who God made you to be. And you, is who the world needs. Not a duplicate of someone else. I’ve heard a few folks say they want to be the next Zig Ziglar. I’ve been called that.
No thank you. Zig Ziglar was amazing and I highly respect his legacy. He was a friend to me at a difficult time and I’ve shared the platform with him in several arena events. But there was never meant to be two of him. Or two of you.
When it comes to your peers or your competition, you don’t need to emulate a faulty model even if it delivers results. All results, no matter how impressive, are merely temporal. Do you know who the top car salesman in the world was last year? Neither do I. Does it really matter?
What does matter is the character you form, the relationships you build and the skills you develop and use for good things like providing very well for your family, helping others along the way and shaping a culture in need of boundaries set by men and women of character.
When I started selling in 1975, all I had going for me was my character. I was about 20 years of age and began my sales career selling life insurance. In 1976, I transitioned into copier sales and was scared to make cold calls, petrified to do product demonstrations and was afraid to ask for the order. (Not a recipe for success!)
But people trusted me. Maybe it was because I looked like I was 15 years old. I’m not sure, but I like to believe it was because I was absolutely trustworthy. It was not in me to lie or deceive or cheat anyone.
That gave me a foothold. A start. Something to build on.
And build I did. Nearly 40 years later, I was asked to help an insolvent education company grow their sales and become profitable. I was given a pretty free hand and inside 12 months, they did $30,000,000 in sales with a $6,000,000 profit.
How I got there and how I was able a few years later to help a struggling sales team of 3 commercial real estate agents become the fastest growing real estate brokerage in the history of the INC 5000 with an 11,350% three-year growth rate after that is ATTRIBUTABLE TO ONE RADICAL IDEA…
I believed that if God called me to the business arena, especially to the sales and revenue generation side of the business, then He would equip me with everything I needed for success.
And that equipping, that wisdom, that “way” of doing business would be DISCOVERABLE IN SCRIPTURE. It was on me to search, study and learn (through application) the unsearchable wisdom of God that He freely offers.
I did learn however, that God seldom answers the casual inquirer. He prefers to disclose Himself to those who search for Him with all their heart. (Jeremiah 29:13)
So I inquired, pursued and overtook the Wisdom that God freely offered me. And I spent my adult life, deciphering, practicing and cataloging what I have learned.
